History of the Charity

The Richard Carr Foundation

In 2011 we have looked to formalise Woburn Oyster Festival’s traditional community fundraising and donations processes and establish a formal Charitable Foundation, namely the Richard Carr Foundation.

The Woburn Oyster Festival had been running for since 1994 and the original not-for-profit organisation had distributed profits of well over £100K in that time; supporting local community projects with a general focus on the youth.  Hence the original name for the organisation was Woburn Youth Project.

Last year it was decided to widen the remit of our donations, but still maintain a focus in improving both community cohesion & citizenship in Woburn Village.  This year, as a mark of remembrance to Richard Carr, who was not only massively influential in running the Oyster Festival but to Woburn Village in general over the last 10 years, we decided to establish a Charitable Foundation in his memory.

The Richard Carr Foundation is a grant making organisation registered with the UK Charity Commission (Charity Registration Number: 1143310).  The Foundation receives all the profits from the Oyster Festival and then awards grants to projects in the local community.

The main aim of the Foundation is to support the inhabitants of Woburn and the surrounding area, notably by supporting local community amenities as long as they align to our values, aims & objectives, as laid out in our Constitution.  These are summarised as follows:

  1. The advancement of education
  2. The advancement of religion
  3. To provide or assist in the provision of facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation or other leisure time occupation of individuals who have need of such facilities by reason of their youth, age infirmity or disability, financial hardship or social circumstances with the object of improving their conditions of life
  4. Such charitable purposes for the public benefit as are exclusively charitable according to the laws of England and Wales as the trustees may from time to time determine.
